Weather and Seasons:

Chobe: Most visitors to Chobe choose to go during its famous dry season game viewing. May to the end of October/ early November is when a large concentration of animals gather around the Chobe River and the park’s central Savuti region. The rainy season is between November and March. Rains usually begin mid- December making travelling through the area difficult at times but most of the Chobe River area is still accessible. This is also the warmest time of the year with high humidity and abundance of mosquitoes. Most animals give birth during this time and bird life is abundant. During May, June and July, the park becomes bone- dry and nights are freezing cold. Temperatures start to rise as rainy season approaches and August, September and October offer excellent game viewing but temperatures can soar during this period.

Madikwe: Daytime temperatures average around 30°C. The highest rainfall months are between November and February, though rainfall tends to come in short, sharp bursts and then the skies clear. The days can be hot and humid but the nights are beautifully balmy. During the rainy season the park’s vegetation is particularly lush, green and pretty; the soil is a distinctive deep red. This is the best time for birders, and for rich photographic contrasts. The winter months in Madikwe are dry and cool, with crisp clear blue skies. Night temperatures can sometimes drop to 2°C so be sure to bring warm clothes if considering a visit during this time. Day temperatures average a comfortable 23°C. This is the best time for big game viewing, with animals being forced to move around in search of the scarce water supplies.

This safari may be done in reverse from Madikwe to Chobe, but flights from Gaborone to Kasane are only 3-4 times a week. Please enquire about availability.

Itinerary

The adventure kicks off with a collection from the Kasane airport in Botswana by a Pangolin representative. Guests will then be taken to the 4-star lodge on the banks of the Chobe River – which will be the base for the first three nights. From here it will be relaxation and the chance to settle in before morning and afternoon photographic excursions for the remainder of the stay at Chobe. A great aspect of this part of the trip is that operator-owned cameras and lenses may be used free of charge, and if you have your own equipment already, a “base plate” can be supplied for capturing that perfect shot – these are used to attach the cameras to the custom-built photo chairs and gimbals on the photo boats. Advice and tips will also be offered by the photo guide for every attendee on the trip.

On the fourth day guests will be transferred back to Kasane Airport after brunch and then flown to Gaborone in the souhern part of Botswana. A short drive will follow to the world-class Jaci’s Lodge in the beautiful Madikwe Game Reserve. During the stay here, morning and afternoon game drives will be offered as well as entrance to the Terrapin Hide, an ideally-located hide which is submerged in a very popular waterhole with 24 hour access.

The trip concludes with the option to either fly directly from Jaci’s Lodge to OR Tambo Airport or to visit some of the other awe-inspiring reserves in the area including Pilanesberg National Park. Charter flights are available directly from Madikwe to Sabi Sands for travellers wanting to extend their photographic safari.

Kindly note that the trip does not include Visa fees where applicable, drinks other than those specified and gratuities, laundry and other items of a personal nature.
